thanks but no thanks

The problem: you try to move a window around in Windows 7 and it goes full screen.

The fix: Open Control Panel / Ease of Access Center / Make the Mouse easier to use. Place a check mark in the Prevent Windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen option. Hit Apply, OK.

Bang!

SCREAMING vs talking

it's true, believe me EVERY TIME YOU FAIL TO USE YOUR LOWER CASE IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE SCREAMING. BESIDES, THAT LOOKS RUDE. Wanna double-check? Ask any friend of yours. capital letters are great to emphasize a word or even a sentence. When your entire paragraph is in all caps, well, there's no better way of saying this, but that just looks annoying...

how about some circumventing...?

try to send a 30MB file and see what happens. nada. email services limit the size of your attachments. try doing that with Dropbox. (dropbox.com).

dowload it, install it, sign up and then go to your Dropbox folder on your desktop. right-click the big boy you're trying to send and choose the option "share dropbox link". all you have to do now is paste that link in the email and send it to your friend.

saving notes once. everywhere

not only is it possible, but also free. download Evernote (evernote.com). notes sync across multiple computers and smartphones. it does for notes what Dropbox does  for individual files. type a shopping list on the computer and it is on your phone. keep clients notes everywhere. genius.

the end is near for xp

no more updates for xp as of 4/8/14. hackers paradise. time for you to buy a new computer, seriously. it's been probably what, 10 years? prices have come a long way: $300 for a decent laptop or desktop. back up your files and go for it. you'll probably need a new Microsoft Office: it's been 10 years after all.

danger, Will Robinson

a flash drive aka pen drive, memory stick, can be used as backup as long as you do it often and regularly. prices range around $10 (16GB) and $20 (32GB). don't pay more for smaller ones! if your data exists only in one place, as Whoopi in Ghost: "Molly, girl, you're in danger".

in my name??

a lot of sites "accept" your Facebook credentials as a means to grant you access to their services. the problem with that? you're unnecessarily granting access to your Facebook contacts and information. besides, they now have your FB password. I don't know about you, but I hate that idea...

protecting friends' email addresses

Power Point presentations with music are er.. cool. when sending them as an attachment to 50 people, make sure you protect your friends' privacy: refrain from adding all email addresses to the "To" box on your favorite email program. instead, put the addresses in the "BCC" box. in the "To" box, put your own email address. nobody will be able to see who else the email was sent to. believe me, people will appreciate THAT. not necessarily the Power Point, but the fact that you went the extra mile to protect their privacy.

teach Office new tricks

every time a new Microsoft Office version comes out, it's the same problem: older Word can't open new Word files.

the fix: Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack. it's a file you download from Microsoft. after in

stalling this "compatibility pack", your Office will be "like" new. it will enable, for example, Word 2003 to read files created with newer versions of Word, like 2007, 2010 or 2013. save those bucks for a beer. or two.

building blocks

A new level of control can be achieved when you click the wrench symbol on the upper right corner, Account Settings and then Blocking (on the left). Here you can:

(1) Block People, that is, close fans, closer fans, the closest fans. aka stalkers. Or when Unfriending is not an option

(2) Block App Invites from compulsive inviters. Some people just can't help but… invite… Well, not anymore

(3)Block Event Invites, to keep those party animals that keep inviting you for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day of the week

(4) Block apps! You can either type in the name of app and BANG! Alternatively, you can block the app when you get an invitation to download an app. Just click on the x that appears when you hover the mouse over the request.

Good blockings!

smarter searches

If you go to google.com and type in a UPS tracking number, it will take you to the UPS webpage and give you information about your package. Similarly, searching for a flight number will give you info on the flight: whether it's on time, position on map, etc.

saving the world

If you have only one copy of your data on the planet, it’s as good as nothing. The day that computer dies or gets a nasty virus, your data dies with it. Create copies of your files. A  1TB hard drive (1,000 GB) costs around $70. If your house burns down or floods,  it’s a different story. Online services charge around $60/year (Crashplan or Backblaze).  Get a 1TB hard drive and an online backup. Now.  And sleep tight.

don't tag me bro

Facebook is more fun when your face isn't tagged on Darth Vader's head or Chewbacca's tail. Take control: Click on the Facebook wrench on the top right, Select "Privacy settings". On the left, select "Timeline and Tagging". Click "edit" where it says: "Review posts friends tag you in before they appear on your timeline". Enable it. You'll get a notification every time someone tries to tag you. Yay!
